Strengthen ‘Living Laboratory’ collaboration via Campus City Collaborative (‘C3’). A green education and training collaborative between post-secondary institutions, the City and private sector firms can develop a green workforce development strategy and align research and internship programs with Vancouver’s environmental and design challenges. Collaboration is essential to create and document green systems and strategies which Vancouver excels in, and provide a platform to commoditize and export this expertise.
Preparing Vancouver's workforce for new job opportunities through research, education and training.
Education and capacity building are essential in order to prepare Vancouver’s workforce for emerging job opportunities as we transition to a green economy. Capacity building extends to training for companies in traditional sectors to improve their environmental performance, and research and monitoring to track and improve understanding of the green economy.
Actions for this strategy
Support for green education and training at middle schools, high schools and tertiary sector training providers. For example, focus on green building which will see increased demand for skilled workforce due to Vancouver’s energy efficiency retrofit policy.
An evergreen, up-to-date database of green education and training programs can work to highlight career entry or career change opportunities offered in the green economy, while documenting the skills upgrading available for those whose job descriptions are evolving.
Continue to green existing businesses by supporting sustainability consulting services for companies in traditional sectors. The training helps them improve environmental performance and drive demand for green products and services across the entire local economy.
Monitor and research Vancouver's Green Economy. Tailored policy research for green cluster development and regular survey of local green economy every three years.
Thank you for your input! The strategies and actions listed here are drafts. Read the final version of the Greenest City Action Plan.
Double the number of green jobs in the City by 2020, over 2010 levels.
There will be a greening existing businesses target, but that is still in development.
